He’s back from an amazing three-week trip to the US, and told us about how SPIE Photonics West 2024 was an absolute blast! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It’s like stepping into a world of photonics wonder, with lasers and optical components stealing the spotlight against the backdrop of San Francisco’s iconic skyline!
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From captivating presentations to lively discussions, not to mention the sprawling exhibition floor, this conference had it all! Every moment was a whirlwind of learning and inspiration, with some moments even being PAWfect…<\/p>\n

In this interview, Mattia Longobucco tells us about the highlight of his trip \u2013 presenting his latest research, “PT-symmetry breaking in dual-core phosphate-glass photonic crystal fiber,” on January 29. “It was an honor to collaborate with IMIF and FUW to get this outstanding achievement for my scientific career. The level of interest from attendees was truly unexpected and has motivated me, even more, to dive deeper into my studies of fiber optics and photonic technologies” – says Mattia.<\/p>\n

Mattia, you were a postdoc researcher at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, under the supervision of Prof. Wonkeun Chang. What did you do as part of his team?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As a postdoc researcher at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), I was actively involved in investigating the potential of gas-filled hollow-core fibers for developing a new and compact fiber laser source. Our research aimed to harness the unique properties of these fibers to create high-performance lasers with improved efficiency and compactness.<\/p>\n

Working closely with Prof. Chang was an incredible journey of collaboration and discovery. Prof. Chang brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to me and our team, particularly in computational modeling and theoretical analysis of optical phenomena within these specialized fibers. Throughout our collaboration, we have been able to combine his expertise in simulations with my experimental work, creating a synergistic approach to solve complex challenges in the field. By integrating computational modeling with practical experimentation, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles governing pulse dynamics and to explore innovative strategies for optimizing the performance of gas-filled hollow core fibers.<\/p>\n
